Devon Ales
The Mansefield Arms pub in the small town of Sauchie just outside Alloa
in Clackmannanshire has been operated by the Gibson family for over twenty
years. It has been classed by the owners as a "...true Scottish working
man's bar...". In 1988, the present owners re-introduced serving real ales
to the pubs customers which led to numerous awards from CAMRA. This love of
cask-conditioned ale further led publican and owner John Gibson to pursue
the idea of installing a purpose-built micro brewery at the rear of the pub.
During test brews, local ex-miners provided feedback on the ales which led
to the naming of the new brewery. Devon Ales was established in 1992.
The small microbrewery houses a 5-barrel plant. Three running brews are maintained as well as occasional specials that have included a cask-conditioned lager. John handles all brewing duties and taught himself through books and trial-and-error (like so many homebrewers).
All the beer brewed by Devon is sold either at The Mansefield Arms or at the Gibson's other pub just up the road, The Inn at Muckhart. Brewery visits are available through prior arrangement.
