The first Far North Brewery beer was brewed on 1 July 2000 by long time homebrewer Peter Martin. Peter was born in the Borders but spent around 20 years in London working as an accountant and honing his homebrew craft. He then changed occupations to hotelier and obtained the Melvich Hotel in Sutherland on the north coast of Scotland. Peter felt the desire to offer craft-brewed real ale to his customers at the hotel. Hopefully more locals will acquire the enthusiasm as well.

Presently only a firkin (72 Imperial pints) is brewed per week. Peter hopes to expand to a 5-barrel system in the future and pursue arrangements to get his products offered in other Highland area establishments.
