It was Andrew Murdo Ribben's dream since childhood to settle in Stornoway
on the Hebridean Isle of Lewis. Following one of many summer holidays on the
island, the idea of locally produced real ale sparked in Andrew's mind which
led to the founding of the Hebridean Brewing Company. After leaving the
pharmaceutical company that he worked for, Andrew worked at the Flagship Brewery in Kent to gain
experience in the brewing trade. Brewing began in January of 2002 in
his beloved Stornoway at the far northern reaches of the United Kingdom. It
is the only alcohol producer in the Outer Hebrides.
The 10-barrel brewing plant at Hebridean originated at a brewery in West Midlands and was put together by Shobwood Engineering of Burton upon Trent. Andrew established a strong relationship with Don Burgess of Freeminer Brewery who continues to lend his insight.
Hebridean's products are presently regularly available in five outlets throughout the Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris. Occasionally, outlets in Ullapool, Inverness and other parts of the northern Highlands are supplied. A brewery shop and bottling line are in the plans for the future.
