Today's Breweries
The Scottish
brewing industry has never been more geographically or
stylistically diverse than it is today. Breweries stretch from Dumfries
and Galloway in the south to as far north as Shetland. Profiles of
Today's Breweries are arranged by geographical region according to the map above.
In the early 1980s, small breweries began to rise again in order to resurrect Scotland's proud brewing heritage after the ravages of the conglomerates nearly destroyed the industry in the 1950s and 1960s. This trend continues to this day with many newcomers contributing in areas all over Scotland. Breweries vary in size from basic five barrel (or less) microbreweries and brewpubs to major producers.
If you're planning a visit to Scotland (or, if you live there and haven't had time to become familiar with them), please check out the breweries in the area. Most offer tours either regularly or by request so please phone ahead and let them know you're coming. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to see you. If you can't make it to the brewery itself, find out which local outlets supply their beers and check them out that way. You'll be very glad you did!
As always, if you have information on a brewery not listed on ScottishBrewing.com, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
