July 2010

Just added a new page to the links section called "Finding Real Ales". This was spurred by a recent email from Terry Dicks, Managing Director, of Your Round. Your Round is a website to help everyone in the real ale trade from brewer to drinker notify and find real ales in the UK.

ScottishBrewing.com gets an entirely new look (yet again). I really felt the last design, while intentionally sound in trying to emphasize a historical look, was very tired, dull and boring. The new design is not perfect but I think it is miles better. Please let me know what you think.

In addition, as much as it pains me I've added a new section to today's breweries. I've titled this section Sadly Gone as I thought other names were too demeaning. This section represents contemporary breweries that have unfortunately closed or ceased brewing. Why have a section for breweries no longer in operation? I'm a brewing historian, I think every decent brewery deserves to be remembered. One thing that really pains me about this new section is the first entry - the Windie Goat Brewery at the Failford Inn in Failford, Ayrshire. I visited this incredibly fine pub a few years ago with my best mate, Glasgwegian Alan McRobb, and spoke with brewer Michelle Kelsall. Michelle's beers were very good and well received. At this point in time I have no idea what happened but it is related to a change of ownership of the pub. I wish Michelle all the best. As a brewer, she will be sorely missed - for now as I hope she continues at some point in the future. In summary, I hope this list stays were it is. I don't want to see any more Scottish breweries disappear. I will, however, add some earlier breweries that were in existence but are with us no more.
